"Problem”

I woke up with a problem,

I took with me to bed,

The last thing I remember,

Was words that Jesus said.

Let not your heart be troubled,

My peace I leave with you,

Don’t worry ‘bout tomorrow,

Seek first the Kingdom true.

But, see, this big bad problem,

Is nothing I can solve,

It never really goes away,

Nor static, it’s evolved.

You might call it a mindset,

That needs the daily grace,

To not let it affect me,

As I try to run the race.

I cowboy and I husband,

Take care of my small string,

Of horses and of people,

And try to them to bring,

My whole-hearted effort,

Work and pray, invest,

I’m also knocking on some doors,

And praying for God’s best.

But here’s that old, bad mindset,

That’s plagued me for so long,

It’s never to expect a thing,

I know that it is wrong.

It’s full of “yes, but I can’ts,”

The promises He gave,

Are really for the others,

Who did well once they’re saved.

And not like some old trier,

Who’s fallen down so much,

And had unanswered prayer requests,

And I felt so out of touch.

I will not let it stop me,

I haven’t let it yet,

I give it all to Jesus,

He won’t let me forget,

That He is right here with me,

And He will not forsake,

And all that He calls me to be,

I’ll have the grace to make.

But see it boils down to one thing,

And that’s a daily choice,

To listen to my old default,

Or seek to hear His voice.

So maybe this will help you,

If somehow you’re the same,

So many people struggle,

But God has called your name.

And in the end He loves us,

And we belong to Him,

We’re not where we are going,

But gone from where we’ve been.

One day is really all we have,

And that is called today,

And in this space that is today,

He’s Lord, and it’s okay.

“…let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think…” (Romans 12:2, NLT)

How we habitually think determines how we habitually behave. It’s not just random thoughts, it’s “default” attitudes and patterns of thinking that keep us from God’s highest and best. But God has promised to renew our minds and change the way we think. His truth, imparted to us by the Holy Spirit and from God’s inspired word, will radically change and reverse long-held beliefs and attitudes. Jesus said the truth would set us free, and it will. But we must apply ourselves to the truth, and choose to cooperate rather than run from it. Choose the truth and the truth will change your mind. It’s that simple, yet profound.

Lord, change our lives by changing how we think, in Jesus’ name.
