"Blessing"

Don’t you ever doubt it,

Out here we know about it,

And that’s the Good Lord’s grace to see you through.

We’ve had our share of dry times,

With lots of steep old hard climbs,

And we have seen what faith in God can do.

Grew up way on out there,

That ranching work was our share,

And all we did depended on the weather.

Can’t always predict it,

And sure can’t interdict it,

Praying to heaven, working hell for leather.

And I’ve seen my old grandpa,

Sit down beside my grandma,

Fold their hands and bow their heads in prayer.

They’d ask for rain and got it,

Here came a cloud, they’d spot it,

And pretty soon the moisture, it was there.

I heard them talk of real dry,

And sometimes grandma, she’d cry,

Remembering their times of loss and pain.

But in the end they made it,

You’d often hear ‘em say it,

They had to trust the Good Lord once again.

A simpler time, it is true,

But through the hard times faith grew,

And they just knew for certain they’d be blessed.

And through it all the blessing,

In spite of life’s distressing,

Was there and that is what they both professed.

“And God will generously provide all that you need…” (2 Corinthians 9:8, NLT)

When people lived closer to the land their entire livelihood was determined by the weather. Whether they were trying to grow a crop or were in the livestock business, having the right amount of rain made all the difference. That may be one of the reasons people seemed closer to God back then. And so many of the lessons of scripture are based upon farming examples. You may live in a city, and live far away from anything we’ve described in this poem. But the same God that heard the prayers and blessed the lives of our grandparents is with us today. He invites us to pray about everything and trust Him. His blessings are waiting.

Lord, help us trust You to give us what we need when we need it, in Jesus’ name.
