"Cold"
I’ve been out there when the wind was cold,
I wished for warmer clothes,
Tryin’ to get some feed or hay,
To cattle ‘fore they froze.
Boots and chaps, long johns, too,
A scarf around my neck,
Bundled up from head to toe,
But not enough, I ‘spect.
I’ve saddled horses when my hands,
Could hardly feel a thing,
Even gloves were not enough,
As bitter as you’ve seen.
One time a storm of sleet blew in,
Before we could get through,
The heater in that pickup,
Was the best of all, it’s true.
A night while horseback campin’,
Plunged down in the teens,
Friends came to my rescue,
I survived that frigid scene.
And on and on the stories,
Of snowy, freezin’ weather,
But I can say in spite of that,
I never wished for better.
‘Cause weather is a cowboy’s life,
It’s just the way things go,
And even at this older age,
It’s something that we know.
And those who work outside a lot,
Appreciate what’s true,
That in spite of wind or cold,
Just do what we must do.
And I will say the Good Lord knows,
What we need and when,
And He will shield us from all harm,
Our trust we put in Him.
There’s comfort knowing He is near,
With insulation real,
His grace sufficient to protect,
His brand the Spirit’s seal.
“The Lord is my strength and my shield; my hearts trusts in Him, and I am helped; Therefore my heart exults, and with my song I shall thank Him.” (Psalm 28:7, NAS)
The Psalmist is profoundly thankful, praising God and “exulting” in thanksgiving. Why? Because God has given him strength for every challenge, shielded him and helped him. All of us can say the same. When we run out of strength and are at the end of ourselves, we find the Lord’s strength to see us through. When we feel defenseless and vulnerable, we can have peace and security because the Lord is our shield. When we need help the most, God comes through. No matter the weather, He is everything we need! Praise Him.
Lord, help us to trust in You to strengthen and shield us, in Jesus’ name.
