"Colt"
His mother was a rescue mare,
And just a rack of bones,
But there he stood beside her,
It’s why we took them home.
We poured the feed and wormed ‘em both,
And soon she gained the weight,
And now she is a different horse,
When now I throw the gate.
So time to start to work the colt,
And in the round pen go,
He ran in with an older horse,
I didn’t plan it so.
But then I thought I’ll work ‘em both,
And see how they will do,
I asked the older horse to move,
And the colt, he moved out, too.
When I said, whoa, the older horse,
Stopped just like he should,
And yes, you guessed it, that young horse,
Stopped right there where he stood.
And that’s the way it went from there,
A walk, then trot and lope,
And then we went the other way,
It really gave me hope,
That this young colt is just the kind,
To make a real good ride,
No doubt he got a start that day,
And in you I’ll confide,
I saw in that a lesson,
I guess God helped me see,
That we all need our mentors,
That show us how to be.
And when the Master tells us,
It’s time to move and go,
There’ll be someone beside us,
Who’s there to help us know.
And when the Lord is leading,
To lope or trot or walk,
We’ll find the right encouragement,
And get rid of our balk.
And one more thing I saw that day,
Which has to do with whoa,
To put on brakes when He says stop,
Will save from grief, you know.
A little lesson from the round pen,
But one I think is true,
Don’t try to be lone ranger,
When He sends His help to you.
“Two people are better off than one, for they can help each other succeed.” (Ecclesiastes 4:9, NLT)
Where two or three agree in prayer, God will answer. Where two or three bring correction, restoration is more likely. Where two or three gather in Jesus’ name, He promises His presence. And so it goes…Whatever made us think we can go it alone without the help of others? I know, it’s important to take responsibility for your own decisions and actions. And no one can have a relationship with the Lord on your behalf. It’s up to you as an individual to accept Jesus and follow Him. But God has set up spiritual growth in the context of fellowship, relationship, and mentorship. We do better when we do life together. God help us to realize it.
Lord, help us receive and benefit from the mentors You give us, in Jesus’ name.
