"Counsel"
My good friend up the country,
He gives me good advice,
No doubt he is a cowboy,
His riding skills suffice,
To cover lots of country,
To gather up the strays,
He sure can find the cattle,
When he goes there on most days.
But beyond his skill with livestock,
He has a pastor’s heart,
A friend who will encourage,
And has right from the start.
And he just told me something,
That one will rarely hear,
About the one God gave me,
She holds my heart so dear.
He said I must protect her,
From those who do not see,
Me as a godly leader,
But as some commodity.
Never really heard that,
Nor occurred to me at all,
But let me tell you, brother,
I heard the Master’s call,
To make sure I am careful,
While serving all who come,
That I don’t fail to cover,
My most important one.
Thank You, Lord, for giving,
Friends who stand with me,
Speak the truth and say the prayers,
For all that’s meant to be.
“Oh, the joys of those who do not follow the advice of the wicked…” (Psalm 1:1, NLT)
It mattes whose advice you follow, and we are bombarded by it continually. Through every media channel, we are fed a constant diet of advice about every conceivable subject- our health, families, work, money, entertainment, diet, relationships, spirituality, etc., etc. It pays to pick and choose, but how? The only foolproof solution is to familiarize yourself with the teachings of scripture, and with friends who can help you with biblically-based advice. These two things top the list of how to become a discerning person in a world of chaos. God gives wisdom. Receive it, in Jesus’ name.
Lord, help us receive Your counsel, in Jesus’ name.
