"Day's End"

I slid off the headstall,

He then dropped the bit,

He slowly turned and walked away,

To the feed trough where it sits.

We do the same thing every time,

I always watch him go,

Never trots, but at a walk,

But then he stops, you know.

He pauses, then looks back at me,

I say to him, go on,

And pretty soon he’s munching feed,

I watch him all along.

It’s like our day end ritual,

And sometimes when he’s through,

He’ll look again as if to say,

Don’t you have more to do.

The answer is, not really,

‘Cause it’s the end of day,

A cup of coffee for my bones,

And all I have to say,

Is thank God for this cowboy life,

And thank God for this horse,

I’ve had others that I loved,

But he’s the best, of course.

I’m thankful for the place I live,

And praise God for a wife,

Who loves me just the way I am,

And shares with me this life.

I sometimes wonder at day’s end,

How many more I’ll see,

I leave that in the Good Lord’s hands,

‘Cause it’s not up to me.

But what I think and what I feel,

As the night comes on,

Is thankfulness down deep inside,

I know I am not wrong,

When I say that Jesus,

Saved me just for this,

To enjoy life and praise His name,

And heaven not to miss.

I know it will be wonderful,

Of that there is no doubt,

But Texas can come mighty close,

I came and soon found out.

When I slip the headstall,

Off that pony that I ride,

Drink one more cup of coffee,

And cross to heaven’s side,

Most probably my guess is this,

I’ll have days like these,

Except more perfect than before,

Eternal praise to please.

“The thief’s purpose is to steal and kill and destroy. My purpose is to give them a rich and satisfying life.” (John 10:10, NLT)

Abundant life sounds good, doesn’t it? The actual translation is more like “super-abundant”! But that’s not always how life goes, right? Life is a mixture at best. We have good times and bad, sad times and happy, full and empty, up and down. But Jesus is saying to us that if we recognize and cooperate with His leadership, the good times will be better and more consistent and the bad times will be briefer and more bearable. Life is always better with Jesus! And the best part is that it will last forever. Praise Him!

Lord, give us the rich and satisfying life You promised, in Jesus’ name.
