"Drover"
Sounded lots like thunder
When that old stampede began,
Thousands of their hoofbeats,
Across the rain-soaked land.
And we were hell for leather,
A doin’ all our best,
To get around the leaders,
They put us to the test.
And in the end we turned ‘em,
Got ‘em millin’ if we could,
Before they really scattered,
The way they surely would.
Only lost a handful,
Never knew just where,
Couldn’t look for very long,
Moved on without a care.
And now there in my memory,
Those days and months and years,
When we drove those old cattle,
And overcame our fears,
Of all the things that threatened,
On those long cattle drives,
Lucky to escape them,
With our very lives.
And now an old cowpuncher,
I ponder life and all,
I often see connection,
With that old cattle call.
And how it is the peoples,
Stampede in many ways,
Go in the wrong direction,
And can’t be turned always.
But still we have to gallop,
And do our very best,
To turn them and to gather,
And try to help them lest,
They are lost forever,
Gone where none should go,
It’s up to us to help them,
And we all should know,
The Good Lord sure will help us,
If we sit our saddles straight,
And ride ‘cause His love tells us,
To go and not to wait.
The one you thought that got away,
Your effort brought them back,
And that brings joy to heaven,
When someone gets on track.
So from the heart of this old drover,
I say this prayer for you,
Turn now if you’re stampeding,
Bring some back with you, too.
“…And how can they hear about Him unless someone tells them?” (Romans 10:14, NLT)
Paul asks the rhetorical question. How will anyone turn to the Lord unless those who believe in the Lord help them? He never answers the question, but leaves it up to us to think and pray about it. How indeed? If the best news on earth has changed your life, what possible legitimate reason could there be for not sharing it? Truth is, it’s as urgent as cowboys trying to turn cattle in a stampede, and we need to take our role seriously. It’s not so much we have to do it, but we get to! We get to play a key role in the salvation process of a person’s life. What an honor, and may we consider it so. Who does God want you to help turn back to Him today?
Lord, use us today to turn someone back to You, in Jesus’ name.
