"Eatin' It"

Folks will say we are what we eat,

They’ll say it loud and oft repeat,

But my thoughts run bittersweet,

When I consider why.

Man’s first sin was in a bite,

Though they knew it was not right,

Compromised and lost the fight,

To the serpent and his lie.

Since then we will toil and sweat,

For every single thing we get,

And all so we can eat and yet,

We never get enough.

On and on the rat race goes,

Seed it, tend it, hope it grows,

Fry it, bake it, raw- who knows,

We have to eat the stuff.

But not just food and what we drink,

But what we say and what we think,

Sometimes drives us to the brink,

A lot can make us sick.

Watch those words, you might just eat ‘em,

Choke ‘em down, and you can’t cheat ‘em,

Better if you just defeat ‘em,

Don’t do it slow, but quick.

Jesus said He was the bread,

Gave living water, also said,

Died and raised up from the dead,

To feed the hungry soul.

And if He gives us calories,

We can spend em, learn to please,

The One who will our burdens ease,

In Him we are made whole.

Jesus said: “Yes, I am the bread of life!” (John 6:48, NLT)

Jesus claimed to be the bread of life, sent from heaven to bring eternal life to all who eat this bread. What was He talking about? The original sin happened when Adam and Eve ate what God commanded them not to eat. You might say it all started with an eating disorder! Since that time, humankind has tried every conceivable thing to satisfy their spiritual cravings. Jesus came to fill that void, feed that hunger, and meet that need. When we receive Jesus we are, in effect, eating the spiritual bread God promised us. And those who do, according to Jesus, will live forever.

Lord, help us receive from You the bread that alone gives us eternal life, in Jesus’ name.
