"Envy"

We wander and we ponder,

Why things go the way they do,

And if the over yonder,

Would be better ‘cause it’s new.

But when walkin’ with and talkin’ with,

The ones who went that way,

They are often balkin’ with,

Their results and say,

That less meaner and lots greener,

Is the crop they see me with,

To me it seems much leaner,

When what’s true I try to sift.

Desire may drive you higher,

But caution makes you wise,

Don’t exhaust yourself and tire,

Seeking someone else’s prize.

I read it and I need it,

What’s written in the Book,

You reap it if you seed it,

So better take a look.

And the tender I remember,

Was advice my Granny gave,

Her words outlived the sender,

Were meant for me to save.

That greener grass that grows so fast,

May not be your best deal,

O’er septic tank the seeds were cast,

It’s true and very real.

Contentment not resentment,

Is God’s big plan, you see,

And He’ll make an amendment,

And from envy set you free.

So hit a lick, but slow your quick,

When envy comes to call,

What you want may look real slick,

Not what you need at all.

“I have learned the secret of living in every situation…” (Philippians 4:12, NLT)

It must be a secret because so few ever find it- contentment, that is. To be content does not mean to be passive or unmotivated. It doesn’t mean you’re just waiting for something good to happen, and not planning and working toward goals and dreams. What does it mean? It means you are able to have peace and enjoy life while you go, and not allow envy or any form of greed or covetousness to control your behavior. it means through Christ you learn to live thankfully, and not be tormented when you don’t get everything you want. Or anything you want, as the case may be. Contentment means you are liberated from the spirit of competition with others, and measuring your success by theirs. Nothing wrong with material things, but materialism is idolatrous and ultimately spiritually lethal. Be happy in Christ now, and God will supply your need and increase your territory if that is His will.

Lord, teach us contentment, in Jesus’ name.
