"I Wonder"

I wonder as I wander,

The steep trails that I climb,

If I had all I’m after,

Would I be happy all the time?

To be honest I don’t think so,

‘Cause there’s always something more,

That we are in pursuit of,

And looking for that door,

That will open wide before us,

To give us everything,

Working, always striving,

With the effort that we bring.

But dreams can be elusive,

We should evaluate,

When it’s time to work and run,

And when we should just wait.

Down time is not wasted,

If we review and rest,

I’d say it’s necessary,

If we expect God’s best.

Another horse, another saddle,

Another acre that we buy,

Another truck, another trailer,

If we had it all, no lie,

These things can never give us,

The reality we need,

Life is not about possessions,

So to God’s word take heed.

He says there is contentment,

In seeking heaven first,

To gather what’s eternal,

To quench our deepest thirst.

There’s hope here for the hopeless,

And peace so deep it sings,

But only if we’re willing,

To receive the grace He brings.

So take a break, my brother,

Before it is too late,

And you have missed life’s meaning,

At heaven’s golden gate.

We live for what we do not see,

Because it Is more real,

Than anything in this world,

We see or hear or feel.

By faith alone we see it,

And faith lights up the way,

Don’t waste another minute,

But seek His face today.

“…set your sights on the realities of heaven…” (Colossians 3:1, NLT)

Deer hunting season just ended here in Texas. I’m not much of a hunter anymore, though at one time I was. Part of the ritual of hunting season used to be “sighting in” your rifle. This was a procedure to make sure that when you saw a deer through the rifle scope and pulled the trigger, your shot would be accurate. The world has a million targets, marketed to us twenty-four/seven. But the only real target that matters is heaven. Paul said we should set our sights on that reality, which alone gives us satisfaction in this life and security for the next. You died to this life, he said, and your real life is hidden with Christ in God. In other words, what we cannot see is more real than what we can see. Ponder that, and take action accordingly.

Lord, help us set our sights on the realities of heaven, in Jesus’ name.
