"Mirror"

When you look in the mirror,

Tell me what you see,

Not the same as yesterday,

And what you used to be.

Gravity will take its toll,

Like a road map wrinkles grow,

The circles underneath my eyes,

And a bigger nose, you know.

And they can sell us lots of stuff,

That promises a lot,

But they can’t take the years away,

Or the stage of life we’ve got.

But good news is that Christ is Lord,

Of each season and each day,

And grace is there for every age,

To help us find our way.

God’s Word is like a mirror,

To show us what is true,

And all the things we need to change,

And what we’re called to do.

So hear and read and so digest,

The words God clearly speaks,

Then go and do all that He says,

Through dark valleys and high peaks.

We are not finished till He says,

Our days on earth are through,

So be a doer of the Word,

Take someone with you, too.

“For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks at his natural face in a mirror; for once he has looked at himself and gone away, he has immediately forgotten what kind of person he was.” (James 1:23-24, NAS)

Hearing God’s word and doing God’s word go together and should never be separated or compartmentalized. Faith and works, belief and action, hearing and doing are the marks of the authentic disciple of Jesus. Looking into the mirror of God’s word and then quickly forgetting what we saw does not excuse us. Head knowledge without practical application only sets us up for greater judgment. Let’s get serious about what God is saying.

Lord, help us hear and do Your word, in Jesus’ name.
