"Serve"
You go and try to help ‘em,
Workin’ cows or get ‘em penned,
You find out when you get there,
That the whole time you’ll contend,
With people who know little,
But don’t know that they don’t,
And there’s no way to tell ‘em,
You couldn’t and you won’t.
But it can be a challenge,
And it can get you hurt,
‘Cause you’re out there with ‘em,
Scramblin’ in the dirt.
The pens are never set right,
There is no easy flow,
Loud when they should be quiet,
Can’t make the cattle go,
Where they are supposed to,
Don’t know a better way,
Amazing if it works out,
And things get done okay.
An exercise in patience,
Is probably good for you,
Don’t say what you are thinkin’,
Just do what you can do.
And leave soon as they let you,
Find ways not to complain,
Maybe change your number,
Or even change your name.
No matter the endeavor,
There will be those who know,
Just what they are doing,
And it’s best to with them go.
But when you serve the ignorant,
Just try to do your best,
Stay reserved and steady,
Those days you’ll earn your rest.
“It is not this way among you, but whoever wishes to become great among you shall be your servant.” (Matthew 20:26, NAS)
Jesus contrasted the way of the world with the way of discipleship. True greatness, according to Jesus, does not come from lording one’s control over others. Rather, it comes when we serve and are willing to become the servant of all. That would include serving people who may be challenging for us. But we do it, not because of how they act, but because of our relationship with Jesus. We are actually serving Him when we serve others, and it is Jesus we want to please.
Lord, help us learn to serve, in Jesus’ name.
