"Unity"

Why can’t we all just get along,

But people rarely do,

Even if they’re Christians,

They fuss and fight, it’s true.

True with politicians,

And husbands with their wives,

True in education,

And in most all our lives.

You’d think the arts would be immune,

But people don’t agree,

Music and musicians,

Don’t bring harmony.

People argue ‘bout their horses,

About the rodeo,

They don’t agree on history,

Or about the past, you know.

The answer is to die to self,

And that is just the rub,

We hold onto our feelings,

And the Spirit’s will we snub.

And He would help us do it,

Forgive and find a way,

To live and work together,

But our selfishness holds sway.

So until we deal with ego,

The unity’s at risk,

The selfishness and meanness,

Is why we often miss,

The blessing of the Good Lord,

The revival He would send,

The pow’r of transformation,

From division that has been.

Behold, how good and pleasant,

The Psalmist wrote of old,

It is when brothers unify,

And fellowship is gold.

It flows with great refreshing,

It’s like anointing oil,

It heals and helps and strengthens,

The devil it will foil.

So let’s try to stay united,

Let’s walk with one accord,

Give no place to division,

And do it for the Lord.

“How wonderful and how pleasant it is when brothers live together in harmony!” (Psalm 133:1-3, NLT)

The Psalmist said harmony among brothers was good and pleasant. He might have added rare! How good? He compared it to the anointing oil that was poured over Aaron’s beard and robe, which symbolizes the anointing of the Holy Spirit. How good? He compared it to the refreshing dew that swept down the slopes of Mt. Hermon from its snow-covered heights. This symbolizes the refreshing presence of God’s Spirit. There the Lord commands blessing and life. That’s how good it is, and why we need it so much.

Lord, give us Your harmony and unity, in Jesus’ name.
