"Way-Maker"

Now that you have lost so much,

What do you plan to do,

I really didn’t have a plan,

And discouraged through and through.

I thought I’d load these horses,

And head somewhere out west,

Maybe find a riding job,

Where I would do my best,

To check somebody’s water tanks,

And chain those Marlboro lights,

Until my next big heart attack,

Made me say good night.

But brother said, you listen,

To what I have to say,

Your life isn’t over,

And God will make a way.

I really didn’t think so,

Thought it was just too late,

But I under-estimated,

The grace of God so great.

Another chance, a better life,

Is what the Good Lord planned,

And rather than snuff out the spark,

The flame His Spirit fanned.

There was a perfect partner,

There was a piece of land,

There was a brand-new mission,

In all that God had planned.

And if you drew a picture,

Of all my heart desired,

Just snap a photograph today,

It’s what I have acquired.

That’s ‘cause though I was finished,

God was not through with me,

And it is never over,

Until He says, you see.

So don’t give up, my brother,

And sister, It’s okay,

God is the way-maker,

Please hear these words I say.

“Take delight in the Lord, and He will give you your heart’s desires…” (Psalm 37:4, NLT)

This is a beautiful promise, but one i have doubted. First, because it just seemed too good to be true. My old skepticism at times got the best of me. Second, because I’ve seen people who used this verse, and others like it, to justify their own selfishness and what they wanted. They even did things that clearly disobeyed God’s word and said it was because God wanted them to be “happy.” Third, receiving my heart’s desire seemed like an impossible dream that would never happen. My life experience argued against it. But, I have now lived long enough to actually experience this promise and it was all worth the wait. Delight in the Lord. Don’t give up.

Lord, help us to delight in You, in Jesus’ name.
