"Worth"

Why does he ride for the money,

Why does he rope for short pay,

If you ask him he might think it’s funny,

But he measures a whole different way.

The life that he chose has its wonder,

Like the sun shining through mane and tail,

The music of wind, rain, and thunder,

At a gallop he lives it full-scale.

He husbands the bovine he cares for,

He’s kind to the horses he rides,

The seasons are what he prepares for,

And it’s far off the grid that he hides.

He lives for the code he was given,

His faith in the Savior is strong,

Gives thanks for the life he is livin’,

He knows it is where he belongs.

When the value of life is all tallied,

And the Good Lord’s the judge of its worth,

All that his loop caught and dallied,

Might be it’s the best on this earth.

“What we are is plain to God, and I hope it is also plain to your conscience. We are not trying to commend ourselves to you again, but are giving you an opportunity to take pride in us…” (2 Corinthians 5:11-12, NIV)

How we value our lives and the lives of others is a spiritual proposition. What the world measures as successful may be a dismal failure in God’s eyes. Paul reverenced the Lord and had not interest in pleasing men. However he asked to be treated fairly, based upon his behavior and the way he conducted ministry. Whether you make your living off the grid or in the city, the point is that we are called to live honorable lives that will glorify God. That is what we should value above everything else.

Lord, help us to live honorably and place value on what Your Word teaches us is important, in Jesus’ name.
