"Are We There Yet?"
Are we there yet was the question,
Long before we were,
And Dad ran out of patience,
It never did occur,
Just how plumb excited,
We were there to be,
No idea the distances,
No way we could see.
But then at last we’d get there,
To that beach or mountainside,
And we’d all go piling out,
From that station wagon ride.
Got grown and still I wondered,
Though kept the question hid,
Are we really there yet,
Yes, that is what I did.
Rode many buckin’ ponies,
Roped many wild bovine,
Cowboyed up and did It fast,
And on my way just fine.
But in my quiet moments,
Though I had many things,
I always felt like there was more,
It just beat everything.
And “there” seemed like a fantasy,
A dream that slipped away,
And as I settled down I thought,
I hope I’ll be okay.
But still thought, are we there yet,
It wouldn’t ever fade,
No matter my accomplishment,
Or good success I made.
And then I heard Him call me,
And, yes, called me by name,
I found that Jesus knew me,
And with His love to claim,
That He was Lord of everything,
And He was Lord of me,
And though at first I didn’t know,
He would help me see,
In Him I found the place to be,
A person not a place,
And suddenly the there and where,
Were clearly in His face.
If you ask are we there yet?
The answer I affirm,
We’re there and we’re still on the way,
The Spirit will confirm.
‘Cause home with Christ both here and now,
Will lead to there and then,
Heaven while we’re traveling,
And eternally with Him.
“Dear friends, we are already God’s children, but He has not shown us what we will be like when Christ appears. But we do know that we will be like Him, for we will see Him as He really is.” (1 John 3:2, NLT)
The Bible tells us that the seeds of eternity are deeply planted in the human heart. Who we are and where we’re going is all about our relationship to God through Jesus Christ in the power of the Holy Spirit. John said we’re already HIs kids, but are on the way to becoming something even more. We know Jesus and have Jesus now. But when we finally see Him we will be like Him. We are home with Jesus now, and going home to be with Him and be like Him forever. Heaven is coming, and there is heaven on the way to heaven, too.
Lord, keep us eternally focused, in Jesus’. name.
