"Boyish"

I’ve known some men and you have, too,

So insecure ‘bout what they do,

They’re always out to impress you,

Because they are not strong.

But weak about just who they are,

Have to prove that they’re a star,

Self-promotion goes too far,

And, brother, it’s just wrong.

Those with real humility,

Don’t have a thing to prove, you see,

Have learned the strength of honesty,

The trigger of God’s grace.

In their own skin they operate,

Always early, never late,

To help others throw the gate,

And help them win the race.

A boyish need is such a shame,

Seek attention, that’s their game,

And thrive when others give them fame,

They love to toot their horn.

But real men who have modesty,

God-given peace, security,

God uses their maturity,

To  help the weak and worn.

“Be on the alert, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong.” (1 Corinthians 16:13, NIV)

There is a widespread consensus that God-given, God-directed masculinity is under attack. Men who take seriously their role as leaders are criticized for being domineering and insensitive. In fact secular culture would just as soon men not even “Identify” their gender as male. If males are not secure in their God-given identity they will be endlessly stuck in boyish pursuits. God’s answer is men who mentor others as Paul instructed Timothy. Men become men of God in the company of godly coaches.

Lord, help us find our true spiritual identity, in Jesus’ name.
