"Come Home"
Can you make it to the church today,
I got an early call,
From my friend who is a Christian,
But I have to tell all y’all,
That the Sunday that he called me,
I was nursing a hang over,
From the party on the night before,
And I wasn’t really sober.
So I lied and said that I was sick,
I’d have to take a raincheck,
And he said that he understood,
He knew I was a wreck.
Two weeks went by and then I heard,
My Christian friend had died,
Hated the last words I said,
When on the phone I lied.
I went down to his service,
At the church house where he went,
I shook hands with his widow,
She gave me what he sent.
At home unpacked the letter,
My old friend’s words to me,
He said that he’d been praying,
That I’d come home to God, you see.
And as I read the letter,
The Spirit called my name,
And as my tears were streaming,
Said I’d never be the same.
And that’s just how it happened,
A long, long time ago,
When I was lost and searching,
And needed help, you know.
I was known to ride the rough string,
And outlaw was my name,
But Jesus took ahold of me,
And His salvation came.
And on any given Sunday,
You’ll hear me stand and preach,
Down there at the cowboy church,
To see who we can reach.
Those out there like I was,
Who still make their excuse,
‘Bout why they live the way they do,
And won’t embrace the truth.
I pray they hear the Savior,
And come home soon so they,
Can find God’s sweet salvation,
Beginning now, today.
“At just the right time I heard you. On the day of salvation, I helped you. Indeed the ‘right time’ is now. Today is the day of salvation.” (2 Corinthians 6:2, NLT)
Some folks keep putting off God’s invitation. They may believe the right things, but have never made a true surrender to Jesus Christ. The Spirit keeps dealing with them, persuading and convincing them to come and give their lives to the Lord. Yet they procrastinate and delay what they know they should do. It’s my observation that, when they do finally come home to the Lord, they wonder why it took them so long! Better late than never, and better today than tomorrow. Now is the best time to get right with the Lord. Today is also the best time to live for Him.
Lord, help us recognize and receive the gift of grace today, in Jesus’ name.
