"Cowboy's Sight"

Of a morning when the grasslands,

Glisten in the morning sun,

Horizon’s red with its plans,

Show the width and depth and run,

Of the wild creation’s story,

Greeting horsemen on the plain,

To speak Creator’s glory,

To those whose minds are sane.

A horseback pastures visit,

Riding out to meet the dawn,

And clearly joy is in it,

And the only thing that’s wrong,

Is that daylight later travels,

To the place where it must rest,

The night comes and unravels,

And we just do our best,

To take the day that’s given,

A horseback in the sun,

And be no longer driven,

By the work that must be done.

But flow with God’s creation,

In the cowboy tasks ahead,

And love this big location,

Where so few are blessed to tread.

And when the shadows lengthen,

We’ll turn and gather rein,

With rest our bodies’ strengthen,

So that we can ride again,

Cross the ranges bovine wander,

Where the hawk is on the wing,

And the glory makes us ponder,

And the old coyotes sing.

Glad for distant places,

So fresh and undisturbed,

Horizon’s silent spaces,

A horseback best observed.

Praises for the sunrise,

And for the waning light,

And twixt the two the beauty lies,

To fill a cowboy’s sight.

“For you will go out with joy and be led forth with peace; the mountains and the hills will break forth into shouts of joy before you, and all the trees of the field will clap their hands…” (Isaiah 55:12, NAS)

This is one of very many verses which talk about God’s creation praising and pointing to Him. I am reminded of the first time my mother saw the Grand Canyon. As she stood taking in the grandeur of that magnificent place her heart, she said, filled with joy and tears streamed from her eyes. Others see a big hole in the ground. If we are sane, however, the witness is unmistakable, and we join the chorus of the creation that gives praise to Him.

Lord, help us to praise You along with all of creation, in Jesus’ name.
