"Cutter"
Feelin’ fresh and froggy,
On a day you saw your breath,
And usually he’d buck enough,
To scare you half to death.
But then you’d get his head up,
And he’d trot on out just fine,
All day long with cattle,
He was just that kind..
He didn’t like a curry comb,
Didn’t want his shoulder scratched,
But a mount to ride the river on,
With every bovine scheme that hatched.
Pin his ears back in the catch pen,
When sortin’ out the pairs,
Climb steeper than a mountain goat,
Without one’s normal cares.
That’s why I called him Cutter,
Though big, that horse could turn,
And nothing much got by him,
He’d make the prairie burn.
And if speed was what you needed,
He could blow tears from your eyes,
Long and rangy as a freight train,
A race horse in disguise.
They finally retired him,
Turned him out so he could play,
Far pastures with deep grasses,
‘Cause he sure had earned his pay.
Come spring while out there checkin’,
No one could find him there,
Thought the winter might have got him,
‘Cause they looked most everywhere.
But then a strange thing happened,
In a far corral unused,
Old pony had some cattle penned,
Cowboy saw it, got confused.
But Cutter, he was sortin’ pairs,
He had his ears pinned back,
He’d nip one when they wouldn’t move,
And make ‘em soon untrack.
Word got out, they gathered ‘round,
To see what he had done,
He trotted off and left ‘em there,
Into the setting sun.
Stories like this spread real quick,
This one is mostly true,
You gotta say it’s worth the read,
So I shared it here with you.
“All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness…” (2 Timothy 3:16, NAS)
I like a good story, like the one in the poem. But when we read the Bible we’re not just reading made up stories that are interesting. We are actually reading God’s words that are inspired by the Holy Spirit. That’s why we must take seriously what it says and try to implement its truth in our lives. If we invest in what the Scriptures teach us we will receive an eternal return and be equipped to do a lot of good till the Lord calls us home.
Lord, help us to receive Your truth, in Jesus’ name.
