"Frontier"

The word “frontier” can bring a tear,

To those who fear it’s lost,

And with it gone, what made us strong,

The cowboy way we’ve tossed.

Exchanged it all, for high-tech, y’all,

Looking down at all our screens,

We disconnect and soon, I ‘spect,

Will cost the future’s dreams.

Can we untrack, to get horseback,

Discover what is real,

To simplify and claim that high,

That comes to those who feel,

They can be true, and what they do,

Shows that they understand,

A code once known, and all home-grown,

Let’s get that fire fanned.

To reignite the righteous light,

Recover the lost way,

The basics good, we really should,

Embrace from yesterday.

“Of course, your former friends are surprised you no longer plunge into the flood of wild and destructive things they do…” (1 Peter 4:4, NLT)

The “former friends” of this verse speak of people who were part of the problem for us. In dealing with any spiritual stronghold in our lives, there are always going to be people who keep us stuck in what is harmful. Today’s poem is about the contemporary trend toward technology, which has become a habit for so many people, especially the young. If you break that habit, you will be different from most. The same is true for other addictions or hang-ups. There will always be people to drink with, get high with, be angry with, commit sexual immorality with, etc., etc. If you want to be free from that behavior, you must find a way to limit the influence of those who don’t want you to change. Love them, but don’t allow them to control you anymore.

Lord, help us embrace a new way of life, no matter what others do, in Jesus’ name.
