"Giant-Killer"

He said we’ll go up this way,

And for a Bama boy like me,

It looked just like a goat trail,

Above the Owyhee.

And when I asked the question,

About it being steep,

He said to trust my pony,

‘Cause the safety he would keep.

And that’s just how we did it,

Over rocks and stony path,

And you could see for miles and miles,

He’d just look back and laugh.

‘Cause he knew down on the flat land,

Is where my work was done,

But cows up here in Idaho,

Move like antelopes for fun.

And way up on white elephant,

The wind, it blew so strong,

And this transplanted Texan,

Felt so keenly I belong,

To the Author of the mountain,

And the desert and the plain,

And out there midst the quakies,

I heard Him call my name.

He said I am not through with you,

Into the future send,

So put behind you once for all,

The things that you have been.

He said regret’s a killer,

And if you don’t let it go,

The drag of it is lethal,

And you already know,

I have in mind a battle,

A giant’s coming soon,

And you’re the one to challenge,

Not give him any room.

‘Cause there inside your bosom,

‘Longside your beating heart,

There lives a giant-killer,

And you must do your part,

Or else you’ll always settle,

For the one left-over bone,

Thrown to the dog so hungry,

Cowered and alone.

I rode down off the mountain,

I came down off the steep,

But I carry with me,

The words I plan to keep.

And then go kill the giant,

According to God’s plan,

And do it for God’s glory,

And not the praise of man.

Think what you will about me,

And say what you must say,

But God is not through with me,

Regret can’t make me stay,

Behind and on the sidelines,

But in the battle be,

I’m suited up in armor,

It’s my identity.

Whatever is the challenge,

Whatever is in store,

With grace to give me courage,

No man can close this door.

“David replied to the Philistine, ‘You come to me with sword, spear, and javelin, but I come to you in the name of the Lord of Heaven’s Armies- the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied…’” (1 Samuel 17:45, NLT)

When David the shepherd faced Goliath, he wore no physical armor nor carried conventional weapons. His courage came from his relationship with the Lord, and it was in the Lord’s name that he challenged the giant. It was the Lord’s battle, the Lord’s name, the Lord’s man, and the Lord’s weaponry. And, against all human odds, the giant fell. We do well to remember that we fight a spiritual battle, and in this secular, post-modern culture, things are getting darker. But have no fear because God is using ordinary people to do extraordinary things. The battle is the Lord’s, and in Jesus’ name the giants will fall.

Lord, use us to be giant-killers, in Jesus’ name.
