"Good Horses"
I’ve had enough of sad good-byes,
To the good ones I’ve put down,
And in my mind when I think back,
My heart inside will frown.
Good horses- I’ve knowed ‘em and rode ‘em,
And had to do without ‘em,
And when I did, I missed ‘em,
And now I miss ‘em still.
Good horses- in my mind I see ‘em and free ‘em,
A bay, a gray, a paint, a buckskin,
They were with me for a season,
And then I had to let ‘em go…
But I never wanted to…never did.
Good horses – to saddle, gather cattle,
Or just spend the day lookin’,
And thinkin’ there’s nothing better,
Than to be astride one like this,
Yessir, all different but the same,
And still I feel it, can’t help but feel it still.
Good horses- a pleasure to treasure,
And look at and touch and enjoy,
And maybe since that last one died,
The way he looked right before,
And I won’t ever again, not ever,
Cover one with dirt, ever,
But just walk away, walk away…
Good horses- admit it, won’t quit it,
Till my body says done,
And then one more ride,
For this old cowboy son.
“Delight yourself in the Lord, and He will give you the desires of your heart.” (Psalm 37:4, NIV)
Horses have always been my delight, and sometimes even got in the way of my commitment to the Lord. When I surrendered my love for horses and was willing for the Lord to control this part of my life, it set me free to do God’s will and enjoy what He gave me. The desire for horses never went away, and over time, He blessed me with some good ones. Some of the things I have wanted I no longer want. Those desires were changed by the Lord. But this one He chose to fulfill. The point is that we allow the Lord to give us what we need and what we don’t, and let Him lead our lives. It’s a beautiful thing when He gives us the desire of our hearts!
Lord, give us what You desire the most for us to have, in Jesus’ name.
