"High Lonesome"

It’s called an old high lonesome,

And where you need to go, son,

When all is said and then done,

And life just crowds you out.

Step up and in the saddle,

Don’t worry ‘bout the cattle,

Get gone from all the prattle,

God’s silence all about.

There in that far yonder,

You’ll find some time to ponder,

God’s grace for you is fonder,

That what you thought before.

The power that can heal you,

The Spirit when it comes through,

And showing what He can do,

He opens up that door.

And when it’s time to come back,

He fills all you did lack,

And grace that takes up your slack,

Sufficient for your need.

And in His strength you’re ready,

His Spirit makes you steady,

And promise strong and heady,

His harvest from the seed.

So come on brother, leave it,

I hope you will believe it,

And there with God receive it,

Christ died to make it so.

It’s called an old high lonesome,

And there He’ll call you His son,

The Holy Spirit’s work done,

It’s worth it, don’t you know,

When there alone you go.

“So now I am glad to boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ can work through me…” (2 Corinthians 12:9, NLT).

Getting alone with God is something we all need to do. Even Jesus rose early and stayed up late to be alone with the Heavenly Father. He told His disciples to come apart and rest awhile, and offered rest to all who were burdened and exhausted. It is the quiet moments that we realize God’s grace is truly sufficient for all our needs. Sometimes it’s our weakness and exhaustion that drives us to seek the Lord. Whatever the motivation, we realize like Paul that His strength is made perfect in our weakness. The world says when you’re strong, you’re strong. The Lord says when you’re weak, you’re strong. I believe it.

Lord, help us find Your grace in the quiet place, in Jesus’ name.
