"Hydrate"
The horses, they need water,
The cattle need it, too,
And when things get real hot and dry,
You must use care, it’s true.
Overheated, thirsty livestock,
Can really go down quick,
Important they get water,
Or else they could get sick.
Sometimes the heat of summertime,
Makes you feel out of touch,
The soaring temps and dripping sweat,
Can really be too much.
And if you don’t just take a break,
Hydrating as you go,
It can really be a problem,
And can happen ‘fore you know.
I find in this a lesson,
‘Bout what Jesus wants to give,
He called it living water,
And all who drink it live,
Hydrated with the Spirit,
And even when we die,
The river takes us past it,
To our home beyond the sky.
Some don’t know what’s the matter,
With their weakness and their will,
They’re drinking what the world gives,
And never get their fill.
They need the living water,
And here’s the best of news,
All who say they’re thirsty,
Can get some and they lose,
That desperate, sick old feeling,
Dehydration takes it toll,
But with the living water,
Their lives are on a roll.
So if you’re working in the heat,
Be careful, stop and drink,
And if your thirst is spiritual,
Don’t wait until you sink,
But come on to the water,
There’s plenty, don’t you see,
Quenches like no other,
It was always meant to be.
Jesus said: “Anyone who drinks this water will soon become thirsty again. But those who drink the water I give will never be thirsty again. It becomes a fresh, bubbling spring within them, giving them eternal life.” (John 4:13-14, NLT)
When Jesus encountered the Samaritan woman is was a very unlikely conversation. Racial, religious and gender differences were significant obstacles. But Jesus used the occasion to get to the heart of what the woman needed. She didn’t need a new man in her life. She’d had plenty. She didn’t need clarity on the best place to worship God. She argued with Jesus about that. But she needed living water and that is exactly what He gave her. The entire village was impacted, but more importantly, the one woman with personal problems, relational issues, and spiritual confusion finally got it right. If she can, we can, too. Are you thirsty?
Lord, give us the living water of Your Spirit, in Jesus’ name.
