"I'd Rather"

I’d rather be a cowboy,

And know it’s who I am,

Than try to be somebody else,

And make the world my fan.

I’d rather ride my horses,

And stay away from town,

Than live with the affluent,

Trade smiling for a frown.

I’d rather drive the cattle,

And even scoop up poop,

Than be driven by the dollar,

And live life in the loop.

I’d rather live so simply,

And try to do what’s right,

Than party with the big dogs,

A running day and night.

I’d rather live for Jesus,

And His disciple be,

Than go along to get along,

And miss a life that’s free.

I’d rather love the lonely,

And serve the least of these,

Thank cater to the powerful,

And all their whims appease.

I’d rather go to sleep at night,

With faith in God above,

Than wander through this world alone,

And miss all His great love.

“Yes, everything else is worthless when compared with the infinite value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord…” (Phil. 3:8, NLT)

Time can eventually bring one to a reality crisis in which we ask “what really matters?” Our hearts long to know what’s real, what’s valuable, and what’s worthy of our life investment. Paul said knowing Jesus had infinite value. That means it was so important and powerful, he had no way to measure it adequately. Instead, he reacted by celebrating the reality he knew was too big to measure. Isn’t that a wonderful reality? Big enough for every problem, but they may never know if they don’t surrender their lives to Christ. When it comes to value, it doesn’t get any better, bigger, or more important. Believe it.

Lord, help us turn from life’s trivialities to what matters most, in Jesus’ name.
