"Laugh"
Sometimes it’s just a chuckle,
Or just the hint of a little smile,
Sometimes it’s plumb hilarious,
And takes a little while,
To stop your eyes from tearing up,
‘Cause you laughed so long and loud,
Can happen when you’re all alone,
Or even in a crowd.
Sometimes it’s quite contagious,
And spreads from laugh to laugh,
Starts slow and then goes faster,
Charts high on any graph.
I love to hear the children,
With their giggles and their shrieks,
And the gasps and groans of oldsters,
When they puff out their old cheeks.
Sometimes it’s really nasal,
And far more nose than mouth,
It’s like that here in Texas,
And sometimes way down south.
It’s high-pitched and has low notes,
Like it’s coming from a well,
And sometimes barely audible,
But still funny, you can tell.
They’ll giggle at the church house,
When someone splits their pants,
And after on the way home,
‘Cause of all the preacher’s rants.
The comedy of shopping,
Down at the old Wal-Mart,
It’s not unlike a circus,
And each one does their part,
To make it entertaining,
And as funny as can be
We’re not laughin’ at ‘em,
But with ‘em don’t you see.
But the greatest of all laughter,
From the greatest joy of all,
Comes from the smiling Savior,
And those who hear His call.
‘Cause it just bubbles over,
To cheer up all the sad,
And even has an impact,
On everything that’s bad.
So lighten up and laugh some,
It’ll do your old heart good,
Spread a little joy around,
You know you really should.
“Then our mouth was filled with laughter and our tongue with joyful shouting…” (Psalm 126:2, NAS)
The Psalmist described the joy the people felt when they were released from their captivity and brought back to Zion. For them, he says, it was like a dream come true and their mouths were filled with laughter. Every blessing from God brings joy, but the greatest relief is when He sets us free from our bondage. it is time the Church was filled with the joy of the Lord with laughter and shouting!
Lord, fill us with your joy, in Jesus’ name.
