"Listen"

I tried to pay attention,

And watch the way they rode,

Tried to keep my mouth shut,

When their loops were throwed.

Watched ‘em doctor cattle,

Take care when they got sick,

Found out what to look for,

Off by themselves, not quick.

Studied little details,

Like how they creased a hat,

Or which kind of reins they liked,

All sorts of stuff like that.

I learned to start a young horse,

Not with a video,

But out there in a round pen,

With someone that I know..

Sometimes they would say things,

You might do this or that,

I tried to always listen,

When we our horses sat.

I never walked a step with them,

But always at a trot,

Opened every gate I could,

It helped me learn a lot.

And from those years with cowboys,

The more the time goes past,

I see how if we listen,

We learn lessons that will last.

And if you think you know it all,

That’s just how far you’ll grow,

And many people do it,

‘Cause it’s their pride you know.

If you mentor someone,

Who wants to learn from you,

Pass along your wisdom,

And help them get it, too.

I’m thankful for the cowboys,

Who gave so much to me,

I’ll do the same for others,

If they want to be.

Remember in the Bible,

That’s how they got it done,

Mentored those who followed,

And helped them pass it on.

“You have heard me teach things that have been confirmed by many reliable witnesses. Now teach these truths to other trustworthy people who will be able to pass them on to others.” (2 Timothy 2:2, NLT)

Jesus calls every disciple to be a disciple-maker. This means that we use our God-given influence to help people come to know Jesus and grow spiritually. Paul instructed Timothy to pass along what he had been taught to others who could then do the same. This involves being intentional in building relationships of love and loyalty, and letting people know we care about them. No matter where we are in terms of spiritual maturity, there is always someone whom we can encourage along and help. It’s not about being some kind of “spiritual expert.” It’s just about being willing to share your life’s experiences to help someone. It can be as simple as inviting someone to have a cup of coffee, or lunch, or attend church or a Bible study with you. If we pray about it, and are available, we will be surprised what the Lord will do!

Lord, give us opportunities to share with others what we have received from You, in Jesus’ name.
