"Mama"

Mama’s arms were there to hold me,

Her love to me she gave,

Free, without condition,

Like the One who came to save.

And the very first to tell me,

He died and rose again,

Prayed that I would know Him,

With her words and actions send,

The Good News of amazing grace,

She’d known him since a teen,

A life of faithful witness,

Was what her years had been.

She found the Holy Spirit,

She loved to give God praise,

She shared and taught and witnessed,

His banner daily raised.

And later, as the years passed,

Lost most of what she knew,

But loved to see me coming,

Until her life was through.

And then, as she lay sleeping,

She crossed to heaven’s shore,

And, Mom, one day I’ll see you,

And live forever more.

And we will walk together,

And laugh as we used to,

With the wonder of the Savior,

And every dream come true.

“I remember your genuine faith, for you share the faith that first filled your grandmother Lois and your mother, Eunice. And I know that same faith continues strong in you…” (2 Timothy 1:5, NLT)

Timothy was fortunate to have a faith-filled grandmother and mother. They, no doubt, gave him a strong head start in knowing and loving Jesus Christ. It’s always a blessing when this happens, and a shame when it doesn’t. In either case, we know that our heavenly Father loves us with the tenderness of a mother’s love as well. And we can pass that love on to our own children and grandchildren, beginning now.

Lord, help us appreciate the faith of our mothers, and pass it on, in Jesus’ name.
