"More"

Raw and cold and windswept, too,

The cattle needed hay,

So we wrapped and loaded up,

On that Thanksgiving Day.

The sleet began as we arrived,

We opened up the gate,

Dad blew the horn and here they came,

‘Cause they could hardly wait.

We pushed off hay, they gathered ‘round,

To have a bovine feast,

And we were glad to get it done,

Relieved to say the least,

When we could get inside again,

And warm up by the fire,

And pretty soon our feast was set,

Mom’s meal we so admire,

And Dad said, son, you lead the prayer,

And every head was bowed,

And I prayed like I was taught,

And what my Dad allowed.

The cattle fed and so were we,

And thankful most of all,

To be saved by the Savior’s love,

And hear His blessed call.

In spite of storm and icy wind,

We finished every chore,

And gathered for Thanksgiving Day,

God blessed us even more.

“Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ.” (Ephesians 1:3, NIV)

Every spiritual blessing is ours in Christ Jesus. The old hymn “Count Your Blessings” comes to mind. What if all God gave us was eternal life and the assurance that we would go to heaven when we die? That one thing would be enough to be thankful to Him forever. But we have been given so much more, and His generosity with us is immeasurable. Thanksgiving Day is just another time to especially show our gratitude. But “Thanksliving” should be our everyday habit.

Lord, help us give thanks for every blessing, in Jesus’ name.
