"People-Free"
I’m a little mystified,
Because of all the times I’ve tried,
To keep my critics satisfied,
It was such a waste.
‘Cause no matter what you do,
Someone will find fault with you,
Think back to things you have been through,
They leave a bitter taste.
It’s not that we learn not to care,
But without boundaries clearly there,
You end up pulling out your hair,
Just so they will approve.
But God has said that He will smile,
If we seek Him it’s worthwhile,
And we’ll get free after awhile,
The pandering remove.
Lord, please help us live for You,
Live for Your praise in all we do,
Forget about their cheers or boos,
And learn to live life free.
Escape our need for their consent,
Realize You’re the One who sent,
Us to go, with power You lent,
Your purpose we will see,
And we are people-free.
“Obviously, I’m not trying to win the approval of people, but of God…” (Galatians 1:10, NLT)
Paul clearly states that we can’t have it both ways. You can’t constantly try to win the approval of people and have God’s approval at the same time. In fact the Bible says repeatedly that if we do God’s will people will react negatively at times. They may even persecute us because of it. Love everyone. Get along with everyone as best we can. But never wait for the consent of others if God has led you to do something. As one of my friends says, “If God has told you to do, you don’t have to ask anyone’s permission. You might ask for their help, but not their permission.” That’s wisdom! Jesus set the example. He loved people but only did what the Father instructed Him to do.
Lord, free us from our need for the approval of others. Help us live for Your approval, in Jesus’ name.
