"Poems"

The poems keep on coming,

God gives one everyday,

But if you had once told me,

I’d disagree, no way.

‘Cause I could not imagine,

Writing one each day,

But God said give me daily space,

And one will come okay.

That was back a year ago,

In fact longer than that,

End of two oh nineteen,

While at my desk I sat.

And everyday in 2020,

A poem then was sent,

And I just tried to write it down,

And post, that’s how it went.

Twenty-twenty was a year of change,

Divorce, remarriage, too,

I once lived in my friend’s barn,

Three jobs with work to do.

My mother passed away that year,

My job as pastor, too,

I had a lot of old despair,

Didn’t know what I would do.

But in it all and through it all,

I daily made the space,

Sometimes early in the morning,

And sometimes very late.

And daily God would fill it,

Lines of poetic verse,

I knew that He would give them,

I never did rehearse.

And still the Lord is faithful,

And still I make the post,

I know just how it happens,

It’s from the Holy Ghost.

And yes, the people read ‘em,

And I am glad they do,

I pray God will use ‘em,

And everyday for you.

But it’s been a big reason,

I know God’s not through with me,

These small, daily doses,

Of grace in verse you see.

Lord, help us remember,

It’s daily grace we need,

Help us to receive it,

As from Your Word we read.

“…people do not live by bread alone; we live by every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord…” (Deut. 8:3, NLT)

What God says to us is important. How important? According to Moses, who was quoted by Jesus, that’s the only way we really live. How? By every word that proceeds from God’s mouth. There is a reference to manna, which was given on a daily basis and would spoil if they tried to carry it over an extra day. There was only enough for the day, except when they got extra for the Sabbath. One cannot escape the analogy. We live by the daily word the Lord speaks to us. Yesterday’s word is powerful, but today’s word is what we need. It doesn’t matter how God speaks to us, either. It can be from Scripture or nature or through people or in the still, small voice of the Spirit inside us. But hearing that word from Him is crucial. That’s why the daily poem has meant so much to me since the end of 2019. Everyday the Lord is faithful to give me those lines, and I know they are from Him. What difference would it make in your life if you heard Him everyday speaking to You? He is. Let this happen.

Lord, give us today’s word so that we may live, in Jesus’ name.
