"Reminisce"
I do more reminiscing,
When a good friend I am missing,
Mind wanders to my past and younger days,
With my folks there at the table,
Back when I was more able,
I recall both of my parents’ ways.
Dad was loud so bright and early,
And I was quiet and surly,
Sometimes it feel to Mom to referee.
Mama poured me coffee,
She then would drink hers with me,
While Dad was baggin’ up his old hot tea.
Never one for caffeine,
It would have made him more mean,
Just hot tea was all he ever had.
Lord knows if he was faster,
Any job out-last her,
Thank God cause coffee would have made it bad.
He was always in a hurry,
Filled the room with flurry,
I don’t remember being fast enough.
He’d say, come up, sleepy,
It was not a sweet entreaty,
But expected us to step up and be tough.
Dad was a cattle buyer,
By the hundreds, even higher,
And hustled as a trader for his pay.
Hard work was like his mother,
And he’d never known another,
In his wake I lived to put up hay.
Mama was a sweetheart,
And loving us was her part,
In how life worked for us each passing day.
And both long since in heaven,
And I’m in decade seven,
But I still hear the words they had to say.
Hangin’ on and hangin’ in ,
With less to come than what has been,
I’m thankful for this Texas life I lead.
And here in our own homestead,
With the woman of my dreams wed,
This cowboy life is everything I need.
“And my God will supply all your needs according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:19, NAS)
Jesus taught that the heavenly Father knows all our needs and will meet them. In Paul’s discussion about finding the secret of contentment in all circumstance he affirms that God will supply all our needs in Christ Jesus. When we are young, the Lord uses our parents to meet our basic needs. When we mature into adulthood, it’s up to us to find the balance between hard work and trusting God to supply for us. But the older we get and the longer we follow Jesus the more we realize that the Lord has always taken care of us. That’s something for which to be very thankful.
Lord, help us to realize that You always supply our needs, in Jesus’ name.
