"Scout"

I smiled when I first saw him,

And never thought they would,

Ever want to sell him,

Or if I ever could,

Come up with the money,

When the time was right,

But I sure did like him,

Did not forget the sight.

Time passed as it always does,

And on one sunny day,

I got the call about him,

It finally went my way.

That long-legged paint horse,

His mother I once rode,

I knew if he had her mind,

He’s worth more than he showed.

But he could be quirky,

Truth is he was spoiled,

And it took a little while,

To get the kinks uncoiled.

But now he’s stayin’ level,

And bending when he goes,

And light mouthed when I turn him,

Side-passes on his toes.

And bonded now and flowing,

With silent energy,

And gosh, I have to tell you,

He’s working out for me.

Sometimes it isn’t easy,

Can be quite uphill,

But if you have the time to spend,

That pony needs your skill.

It’s not unlike the Savior,

And what He does with us,

Time to get to know Him,

And shows us we can trust.

“Let God transform you into a new person…” (Rom. 12:2, NLT)

God is in the transforming business. If we cooperate He will help us change our minds about what matters, not unlike a horse changing its mind in order to do what the rider desires. It’s not a forced change or a change that happens because of exhaustion. It occurs when doing the wrong thing becomes more uncomfortable than doing the right thing. There is no abuse involved. But the horse or the person responds to the peace given when they willingly cooperate. That’s when real bonding and change occurs. the Bible calls it renewing the mind. It’s beautiful.

Lord, renew our minds, in Jesus’ name.
