"Seek First"
We want it and can’t get it,
And then things go downhill,
We allow our selfishness,
And our ego’s will,
To help us justify it,
And use whatever means,
To go and get just what we want,
Even for extremes.
And strangely once we have it,
It never is enough,
And then we want more of it,
Or someone else’s stuff.
It doesn’t really matter,
What things that you desire,
May be something that’s all wrong,
Or just some pacifier.
Point is there is nothing,
That will fill the human need,
Without the love of God above,
And God’s own truth, His seed.
Faster horses, bigger houses,
Or livestock on the land,
Toys and trucks and trinkets,
If not in God’s own plan,
Will only sadly substitute,
The good He has in store,
So let go of your own control,
‘Cause sometimes less is more.
Seeking first the Kingdom,
Is how Christ laid it out,
And if we do, the promise true,
Supplies our needs, no doubt.
If we will delight in Him,
He’ll grant our heart’s desire,
And over time we trust His love,
Our selfishness retire.
So take your cross, say no to self,
And give up all control,
No question then, your trust in Him,
Will fill your very soul.
“Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and He will give you everything you need.” (Mt. 6:33, NLT)
Seeking the Kingdom of God above all else is the spiritual priority laid out by Jesus. Seeking is intentional, not passive, and the Kingdom is our personal experience with righteousness, peace, and joy in the Holy Spirit. It’s all about surrendering control to Jesus as King, and cooperating with the changes God’s Holy Spirit makes in our lives. Our physical, financial, and material needs matter. But the Lord promises He will deliver what we need in those areas. Period. We either believe or we don’t. And the only way we experience His provision is to embrace His call to seek the Kingdom first.
Lord, help us to seek Your Kingdom above all else, in Jesus’ name.
