"Servants"
The fellas I admire the most,
Are those who gladly serve,
Armed forces, first responders,
Who never lost their nerve.
Add to those the men of God,
Who answer when God calls,
Are willing to lay down their lives,
Their leadership enthralls,
‘Cause it’s not based on ego,
Or any worldly fame,
But blessed in their humility,
They live in Jesus’ name.
Oblivious when resisted,
Forgiving when they’re hurt,
Keep getting up whene’er they fall,
And aren’t afraid of dirt,
And, yes, they stick together,
A purpose-driven corp,
As loyal as the day is long,
You couldn’t ask for more.
They’ll do just what they promise,
If they say it, it’s a fact,
Stand with you to the very end,
And always have your back.
That kind of friend will spoil you,
You only need a few,
It takes awhile to realize,
But if you really do,
You’ll value them for serving,
And that’s what makes them great,
Don’t care who gets the credit,
For Christ alone they wait.
And Jesus said it clearly,
The Kingdom’s greatest sons,
Are the greatest servants,
They are the blessed ones.
So find a need and meet it,
Bring back the one that’s lost,
Lay down your life for others,
No matter what’s the cost.
The smile of Christ the Savior,
Will be yours in the end,
The servants are His instruments,
And He calls them His friends.
“But it is not this way among you, but whoever wishes to become great among you shall be your servant.” (Mark 10:43, NAS)
The world is full of self-promoters. James and John sought a special place with Jesus, to be seated on His left and right when He came into His Kingdom. Another gospel says their mother got involved, too. In any case when the other ten disciples heard about it they were infuriated. Jesus had a “come to Jesus” with all of them, explaining that greatness in His Kingdome was measured by one’s willingness to serve others rather than step in front of them for recognition. We do well to remember this, and that Jesus required humility of His followers, especially the go-getters.
Lord, teach us to be servants, in Jesus’ name.
