"Song"
The great old song they’re sining,
Is one I’ve heard before,
And that old bell they’re ringing,
Can move me to the core.
‘Cause when those tunes are playing,
And those words are sung,
The phrases they are saying,
Can make my teardrops come.
It’s all because of Jesus,
These songs are for His praise,
And I know that He sees us,
When we these anthems raise.
Amazing grace still moves me,
Just as I am and all,
How great thou art approves me,
And hearing the Master’s call.
And standing on the promises,
Blest be the tie that binds,
Yes, Jesus loves me,
We seek and we shall find.
When we all get to heaven,
And that old rugged cross,
And victory in Jesus,
We sing our gain, not loss.
And no I am not saying,
That modern songs are wrong,
But just that old ones move me,
When I feel weak not strong.
So praise Him as He leads you,
And thank God for the new,
But don’t forget the music,
That first brought Him to you.
“He has given me a new song to sing, a hymn of praise to our God…” (Ps. 40:3, NLT)
When the Lord gives you a song, it’s all about praising Him for the work of grace in your life. Until then worship is simply a routine we practice out of some sense of religious obligation. The type of song we sing is not the main concern. It might be a very contemporary song of worship or an old hymn. Either way, if it’s heartfelt and Spirit-led, the mechanics of the song matter little. Spirit-filled people are motivated to praise the Lord. Religious people want to argue about what songs we should use when we praise the Lord. Ultimately such arguments are counter-productive because they miss the point. What’s the point again? It’s to authentically, sincerely, and spiritually give the Lord praise. Sing a new song.
Lord, help us worship You with all our hearts, in Jesus’ name.
