"They Will"

They said that I’d go nowhere,

When nowhere’s where I’d been,

The ones who said it this time,

Were not my blood or kin.

But people I’d met lately,

Who thought they knew me well,

But frankly didn’t have a clue,

It was not hard to tell.

Like all those who pretend to be,

And know what’s best for you,

But never really take the time,

To find out what is true.

And so it’s wrong to trust ‘em,

Even if they say,

That they really love you,

It’s really not okay.

But then there are those people,

Who show they really care,

They listen to the words you say,

They’re glad to have you there.

They don’t come off judgmental,

They love you ‘spite your fault,

They speak the truth in love to you,

To do just what you ought.

And if you fall they’re ready,

To help you to your feet,

And if you get exhausted,

They’ll help you find a seat.

Above all they will point you,

To the Good Lord up above,

Always to remind you,

You’re the object of His love.

And so here is the lesson,

And one that’s never wrong,

There are some folks you do not need,

And some to you belong.

And God will help you find them,

And know for you they’re right,

They will stand there with you,

In every single fight.

“Instead, we will speak the truth in love, growing in every way more and more like Christ…” (Ephesians 4:15, NLT)

The key to spiritual growth, according to the apostle Paul, is to “speak the truth in love.” Makes perfect sense, don’t you think? If you speak truth without love you typically will offend and anger people. If you love without truth nobody’s life changes, but their problems are indulged in the name of mercy. Both truth and love are needed, and those are the people we need to find. They will become our partners and protecters as we face the challenges of life. They will give us support and accountability. The Lord will help us find them.

Lord, give us people who will speak the truth in love, in Jesus’ name.
