"Truth"
Though in pain he lifted rein,
And rode on through the night,
A dark, old trail, he would not fail,
To go and make things right.
He’d told a lie and said he’d try,
But knew deep down inside,
He could not do what he promised to,
The reason for this ride.
Was go confess, admit no less,
That he had been so wrong,
If not too late, he would not wait,
But show he could be strong.
As sunrise shone, he rode alone,
To the place he hunted for,
Found the man and shook his hand,
Then jumped right to his chore.
I said that day I’d stay away,
From your grand-daughter fair,
But I love her so, more than you know,
And it has been my prayer,
That my lie and all my try,
You would somehow forgive,
I’ll honor you, but time you knew,
Without her I can’t live.
The old man smiled and in awhile,
Said son, I understand,
I’ve raised her strong, but I was wrong,
I’ll give to you her hand.
But promise me that you’ll be,
A man of God for her,
She’s begged you see, to be set free,
She’s told me who you were.
And then they prayed, a long time stayed,
For God had sent His peace,
A Grandpa who, knew what to do,
To bless and to release.
The two were one, the vows were done,
And o’er the trail they rode,
God’s will came true, and they both knew,
God’s blessing He bestowed.
“Therefore each of you must put off falsehood and speak truthfully to his neighbor, for we are all members of one body…” (Ephesians 4:25,NIV)
Learning to be truthful is very challenging for some. They have learned how to spin things to their advantage and it’s really hard for them to give a straight answer. The truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth, so help me God, is what we’re after. Like other selfish habits however, this one can be hard to break. But it’s necessary. The old life is based on lies. The new life is all about living and speaking the truth in love. All spiritual growth depends upon it.
Lord, teach us to be truthful, in Jesus’ name.
