"Wave-Walker"

Out here on the water,

The waves and wind are rough,

And if it were not for Jesus,

It all would get too tough,

But I am moving toward Him,

He is the Door you know,

And He says walk on through Him,

I’m trying, but it’s slow.

The wind has not abated,

The waves break up and down,

I hear the Savior calling,

But I fear I will drown.

And if I do stop looking,

At Jesus as He calls,

I go down in the water,

If not for Him my falls,

Would no doubt keep me under,

But I go on, you see,

That’s because with Jesus,

I can learn to be,

A full of faith wave-walker,

And then by faith on through,

To peaceful, calmer waters,

A lighter shade of blue.

We think it’s always safer,

When we’re back in the boat,

And mostly it’s some good advice,

When trying to stay afloat.

But sometimes it’s not the safest,

To stay and keep your seat,

Sometimes the wildest answer,

That we should oft repeat,

If you hear Jesus calling,

And He’s out on the waves,

And not some ghost, but Jesus,

Remember that He saves.

And if your heart is willing,

And your courage surges true,

You just might hear Him saying,

Exactly this to do.

And that’s just get to jumping,

Right out into the storm,

And no, some won’t go with you,

And maybe not the norm.

But, honey, just go do it,

Don’t ask if it’s okay,

You need no one’s permission,

With what He has to say.

It’s different on the water,

But the safest place to be,

He will be there with you,

And by faith you will see.

Yes, He wants to show you,

The way for you to know,

The calling He gives to you,

The way for you to go.

Wave-walking on the water,

Out on the stormy sea,

Faith will get you through it,

And it will always be.

“But Jesus spoke to them at once, ‘Don’t be afraid,’ He said, ‘Take courage. I am here!’” (Mt. 14:27, NLT)

Storms come, no doubt about it. When they do, God uses the situation to teach us to trust Him. Fear robs us of this, but Jesus wants to help us conquer fear and walk by faith in HIm. Simon saw Jesus just like the other disciples, and probably wondered if Jesus was real or a ghost. Fear was still very much in control of the situation. But that changed when Simon asked Jesus if he could walk on water, too. If it’s You, Lord…Sounds more like hope than faith, but Jesus spoke just two simple words to Simon, “Yes, come,” and that’s was enough. Simon’s hope turned to faith, and he jumped overboard to walk on the waves toward Jesus. So far, so good, but then his fear came back. He became distracted by the storm and began to sink. Jesus saved him but asked, why did you doubt Me? The whole incident beautifully illustrates how we learn to walk by faith and trust the Lord. We can walk on water, too. It’s all about keeping our focus and looking to Jesus.

Lord, help us to keep our eyes on You, in Jesus’ name.
