"Weeds"
Been out there on my old John Deere,
Bush hoggin down the weeds,
It’s ‘cause of all the rain we’ve had,
It wets all kinds of seeds.
The grass is green and taller,
It needs mowin’, too,
But the weeds will soon take over,
So nothin’ more to do,
Than get out there and cut ‘em,
Been a nuisance for so long,
Plumb back to the garden,
When everything went wrong.
With sin came thorns and thistles,
And still creation groans,
Till Jesus comes we manage,
And take the grace He loans.
Jesus said the heart weeds,
Can choke the word right out,
The good soil will produce good fruit,
And that’s what life’s about.
It’s better not to dig up tares,
God will make the sort,
He’s the only One who can,
Ad will not come up short.
All these thoughts while cuttin’ weeds,
On my old John Deere,
And all the things the Good Book says,
And understanding clear,
That weeds are just a part of life,
But God will show us how,
Not to let ‘em have their way,
Both later and right now.
“And the one on whom seed was sown among thorns, this is the man who hears the word, and the worry of the world and the deceitfulness of wealth choke the word, and it becomes unfruitful.” (Matthew 13:22, NAS)
The most important parable, according to Jesus, was this one about the sower and the seed. He said if the disciples understood this one they could understand all of the parables. God’s word is the seed and God sows it into our hearts. But the heart may or may not cooperate with it. There are several negative responses, and this is one of them. Perhaps it is the most common in our secular culture. People hear the word but their worries and concerns for wealth are like thorns that choke out the word and render it unfruitful. Remember, this is God’s word we’re talking about. It’s alive and power and can accomplish miracles. But the weeds can choke it out. It’s something to think about.
Lord, help us to receive Your word wholeheartedly and not allow the weeds to stop us, in Jesus’ name.
