"Well-worn Path"

 The clouds all know,

And winds that blow,

How far the cow paths really go.

I wander there,

Without a care,

A horseback trotting slow.

The cattle trail,

Cross hill and vale,

Thirsty cows from ear to tail,

Make their trek the well-worn way,

And so I follow it today,

Cross country that’s large-scale.

And like the bovine that passed here,

I can smell the water near,

Long-trot along without a fear,

And never lose my way,

The path won’t let me stray,

The way to go is clear.

The old ones followed ancient ways,

Passed on to others, come what may,

Well-worn, proven, no doubt they,

Followed and they found,

What their efforts crowned,

Confusion kept at bay.

Like finding water though desert dry,

Stay on the path of truth, no lie,

And follow it until you die,

It’s there for all to find,

Because our God is kind,

And then to Him we’ll fly.

“Ask for the old, godly way, and walk in it…” (Jeremiah 6:16a, NLT)

The prophet Jeremiah called the people to return to the ancient, godly path of those who loved and obeyed God. He said they would find rest for their souls if they were willing to return to it. The Scriptures and the history of the church are full of shining examples of people who followed the Lord and were used by Him. Their lives and voices speak to us, encouraging us to stay focused on what matters most. They may have stumbled along the way, but we can learn from their mistakes, too. We do not have to “reinvent the wheel” in every new generation of Jesus followers. We can ask for the old, godly path and walk in it.

Lord, help us to walk in the old, godly way, In Jesus’ name.
