"What You Eat"
A saying that you hear these days,
You are what you eat,
But I’m not yet a pound cake,
Yet I eat ‘em ‘cause they’re sweet!
And yes, you know I’m kidding,
And there is something true,
About this little saying,
That I will share with you.
In many ways what we consume,
Impacts who we are,
Not just with our bodies,
But more than that by far.
What we feed our minds with,
Whether beautiful and pure,
Or with the trash the world will feed,
And only God can cure.
Do we feed our bitterness,
Our unforgiveness, too,
‘Cause if we do it poisons us,
Becomes a wrecking crew.
Are we on a diet,
Of argument and strife,
‘Cause you know all the negative,
Will destroy your life.
And if you live on drama,
The calories will spread,
Until it always follows you,
The future you will dread.
Do we consume the Word of God,
Or suck the devil’s teat,
God will start us on His milk,
Then feed us with His meat.
So in a way the spiritual,
Calories we digest,
Will tear us down or build us up,
So claim God’s very best.
What you eat is what you are,
In many ways it’s true,
And when God’s word is what you eat,
God’s will is what you’ll do.
“Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise.” (Philippians 4:8, NLT)
Our mental diet matters. It’s all about what we read, watch, and allow our thoughts to focus upon. As a man thinks in his heart, so is he, the Bible tells us. Paul wrote that our behavior is transformed by the renewing of how we think. And with technology making information so readily available to us, we have to be even more careful. If we “feed” on a steady diet of God’s truth, the spiritual calories produced will be spent on doing God’s will. And this will bring us great joy and a wonderful sense that our lives are accomplishing what God intends.
Lord, help us to consistently feed on Your truth, in Jesus’ name.
