"Whisper"

I caught a faint whisper,

A whisper on the wind,

The word that came was kinder,

Than many others when,

Some voice said “unworthy,”

Another said “unclean,”

One said, “Your pride is nervy,

Given what you’ve seen.”

No doubt I have the mileage,

I carry my regret,

Like saddlebags of sileage,

I can’t get over yet.

The many loops, too many,

To catch what shouldn’t be,

My eyes have looked on evil,

That men should never see.

I have disappointed,

Many that I’ve led,

Though I was anointed,

To say what God had said.

I still had my heartache,

And I still bore a load,

So I caused some heartbreak,

And reaped the seeds I sowed.

So, you see, my brother,

When that wind came to me,

I wondered if some other,

Had spoken, don’t you see.

But turns out the Spirit,

Made clear that it was Him,

Though I could hardly hear it,

That faint whisper on the wind.

It simply said “I love you,”

And “I am not yet through,”

And “I will lead, not shove you,”

“There’s more for you to do.”

The words, they are the reason,

I have not given up,

In this uphill season,

He overflows my cup.

One little word from Jesus,

Like water for my thirst,

And no doubt He sees us,

When we need Him the worst.

Back in the saddle, brother,

Step right on and ride,

You can, and there’s no other,

In whom we should abide.

And listen for the Spirit,

When He whispers on the wind,

Ask Him to help you hear it,

No matter where you’ve been.

“My sheep listen to My voice; I know them, and they follow Me…” (John 10:27, NLT)

One of the greatest things about following Jesus is that He promises that we will be able to hear His voice. It’s a great promise, don’t you think? Why, then, are there so many who say they’ve never heard Him speak to them? I believe it’s because we are so geared to listening to everything and everyone else! It takes some intentional focus to hear Him, and finding ways to quieten the competing noise. That said, He is always speaking. How? He speaks through nature, music, people, situations, the Bible, and through the still, small voice in our own hearts and minds. He promises it, and He will, and those words bring life!

Lord, help us hear Your whisper, in Jesus’ name.
