"Wind"

There’s a rhythm in the blowing,

Of the breeze so cool and strong,

Wherever I am going,

The wind sends me along.

I’ve felt it when I’m riding,

Across God’s big landscape,

There can be no hiding,

And no need for escape,

‘Cause the wind is always with me,

I never feel alone,

And it can always lift me,

And guide me safely home.

I sometimes think when Jesus,

Talked about the wind,

And said to Nicodemus,

You must be born again,

He spoke of something present,

You could not see, but feel,

And that was just the content,

Of something that was real.

O wind, you still remind me,

Of the Holy Spirit’s way,

And you will always find me,

And always you will stay.

So there now I am dancing,

Like a feather on the wind,

And the Spirit is enhancing,

And He ever will again.

“…You must be born again…” (John 3:7, NLT)

According to Jesus, being born again was a non-negotiable. But when He described the experience He likened it to being moved by the wind. He pointed to a spiritual reality that could be felt but not always seen and measured. There was a randomness to it, a mystery that escaped human reason and manipulation. Here’s why. If we could make it happen, we would. If it could be put in a religious formula, we would do that, too. Jesus kept it mysterious because it was God’s supernatural work in the human soul, and it could not be earned or engineered by human effort or ingenuity. Think the wind blowing through the trees…. We have much to learn about how the Spirit works. This is one of them.

Lord, help us to be born of Your Spirit and led by Your Spirit as well, in Jesus’ name.
