"Wolves of Regret"

Are you tryin’, yes I’m tryin’,

To put my past behind,

But seems like it keeps doggin’ me,

As if it looks to find,

Somethin’ it can throw at me,

That causes me regret,

I’m whoopin’ and I’m spurrin’,

But can’t outrun it yet.

I hear those wolves a-howlin’,

A pack of them at least,

I see their dust behind me,

They’re tryin’ to steal my peace.

Some say I need to face ‘em,

Instead of run away,

But I’m doing the best I can,

To keep ‘em all at bay.

And now at last exhausted,

My pony, tired and slow,

The wolves are gettin’ closer,

But I’m just too tired to go.

Unsaddled now my pony,

And built up my camp fire,

Laid my rifle cross my knees,

Got ready to retire.

Unbuckled loose my saddle bag,

And lifted out the Book,

Thought that at a time like this,

I should take a look.

I read no condemnation,

From Romans chapter eight,

And how strong God’s love is,

And none can separate.

And when the wolves came into view,

They didn’t seem so fierce,

Fired my rifle in the air,

The silent night to pierce.

And one by one they ran away,

And left me all alone,

But I felt the Holy Spirit,

And His light for me shone.

He let me know that old regret,

Could never hinder me,

As long as I surrendered it,

To Christ who sets us free.

Those wolves no longer chase me,

But if they ever do,

I’ll read to them from God’s own Word,

And tell them what is true.

All my sins are paid for,

The blood cancelled my debt,

There is no condemnation,

And no need for regret.

“So now there is no condemnation for those who belong to Christ Jesus…” (Romans 8:1, NLT)

One of the most wonderful aspects of our salvation is that our eternal debt is paid by the blood of Jesus. It is the best of all news, yet some are blinded to its great effect. When our eyes are opened and we receive His grace, there is always still the temptation to allow our regrets to overwhelm us. We wish we had done things differently, come to His grace sooner, and not missed out on so many opportunities. But God wants us to realize, loud and clear, that He never holds the past against us. it’s done, and we can truly have His peace going forward. No condemnation, in Jesus’ name!

Lord, free us from condemnation, in Jesus’ name.
