"Bully"

Some things we must be done with,

No tomorrow but today,

Like some old gnarly demon,

In Jesus’ name we say,

Just get gone, you devil,

I’m getting tired and sick,

Of all this noise up in my face,

Get gone, and make it quick.

Like some old bull that’s on the fight,

The clown knows what to do,

More times than not that bull will go,

I’ve seen it, it is true.

And when we’re workin’ cattle,

And some old heifer’s mean,

Sometimes a hat shook in her face,

Is all it takes, I’ve seen.

Don’t let ‘em run you over,

The bullies they must go,

With humility and power,

God’s authority we show.

The Book says first to Jesus,

To Him we must submit,

And then turn to the devil,

In Jesus’ name resist.

And then we claim the promise,

That he’ll turn tail and run,

Because we trust in Jesus,

And the victory is won.

“Resist the devil, and he will flee from you…” (James 4:7, NIV)

We know we are all fighting a spiritual battle against what the Bible calls the forces of darkness in high places. A huge part of Jesus’ earthly ministry was delivering people from the demonic, and He even said this was a sign the the Kingdom of God was at hand or near. In the model prayer, Jesus instructed us to pray “deliver us from the evil one.” So, all this to say, it’s a central theme of scripture and not to be ignored. At the same time we don’t blame everything on the devil. We use God-given discernment to recognize when most. of what is happening is just human selfishness or when it really is the work of an unclean spirit. When we see the demonic at work or feel intimidated by one of these spirits, it’s time to take the authority of Jesus’ name and resist it, proactively and intentionally. Sometimes nothing else will do.

Lord, help us resist the devil and make his flee, in Jesus’ name.
