"Cowboy Circle"

Can’t tell you all the reasons,

I’ve always felt this way,

Don’t know if how they raised me,

Or in my DNA.

But since I can remember,

All I ever thought I’d be,

Was a cowboy in the saddle,

That’s how it seemed to me.

I’ve worked at lots of other things,

To earn my daily wage,

But never could get over,

No matter age or stage,

Truck drivin’, teachin’ classes,

Servin’ tables, sellin’ tools,

Years and years in ministry,

Whether with the wise or fools.

I did the things required of me,

What I felt called to do,

But the cowboy on the inside,

Kept saying this is you.

I talked to God about it,

I gave it up to Him,

I told Him I was willing,

To walk away and then,

To show I really meant it,

I sold my saddle, see,

I let it go and said good-bye,

And did it willingly.

‘Cause seek the Kingdom first He said,

And I will meet your need,

And I wanted to be serious,

And harvest a good seed.

Sometimes I’d be a-horseback,

Sometimes I’d be a-foot,

Sometimes I got to cowboy,

And sometimes I stayed put.

But in it all and through it all,

Inside my heart it seems,

If I let myself go there,

Were always cowboy dreams.

And now I rode the circle,

That led me here with you,

And it still surprises me,

What God has called us to.

With longhorns in the pasture,

And horses running ‘round,

And down along the Brazos,

Our own holy ground.

I rise up every mornin’,

And here is what I say,

O Lord, I give You praises,

For another cowboy day.

Others have their own pursuits,

That they are welcome to,

But out here in the country,

The simple life will do.

And soon there will be others,

Who’ll come and get a taste,

Build and know that they will come,

To seek Him in this place.

So that’s the mission we will do,

It’s done the cowboy way,

But based upon what God has said,

And all He plans to say.

“But you have made me as strong as a wild ox…” (Psalm 92:10, NLT)

Sometimes life just wears us out. We get so exhausted with what we’re trying to accomplish we may be tempted to think we can never do what we really want. But God knows our hearts, and if we truly seek to do His will and walk in surrender to Him, He will open the way for us to go. He’ll give us our heart’s desires and the strength to be fruitful, even when others may think we are past our prime. But it doesn’t matter what they think, only what the Lord does in our lives. He can make us as strong as a wild ox!

Lord, give us Your strength and make us fruitful, in Jesus’. name.
