"Feet of Clay"

I don’t have every answer,

To the questions that they ask,

I don’t have enough energy,

When they suggest a task.

I guess I know my limits,

And the reach to which I’m called,

Spent awhile to find it out,

Though at times I know I galled,

Some who were my critics,

No doubt were finding fault,

Devalued what I said and was,

To them not worth my salt.

They didn’t even know me,

Not really but you see,

If they had, it might be worse,

‘Cause with all humility,

I have feet of clay that reach,

Clear up to my ears,

And if you knew how much I’ve failed,

To measure would take years.

So if you truly want to know,

All about my sin,

The commandments God gave Moses,

I’ve broken all, that’s ten.

I’m thankful for amazing grace,

I’m thankful God forgives,

I’m glad He’s given me a place,

And in my heart He lives.

His strength in me made perfect,

My weakness makes God strong,

I only boast in Jesus,

I know that can’t be wrong.

“Therefore, as it is written, ‘Let him who boasts boast in the Lord.’” (1 Corinthians 1:31, NIV)

Boasting in the Lord is not because we weigh things out and realize God deserves more credit than we do. Boasting in the Lord is rather the spontaneous testimony of praise to the Lord. It’s not contrived, rehearsed or calculated in any way. It’s certainly not done out of any sense of duty or obligation. It’s something that cannot be helped in view of God’s goodness and grace. Jesus has become everything to us, and we are compelled to make it known! Bragging on Jesus is our greatest privilege and constant joy.

Lord, help us to make our boast in You, in Jesus’ name.
