"Flower"

The Bible has a lot to say,

About the life we lead,

Says it’s like a flower,

That springs up from a seed.

It shows to us its beauty,

It has a pleasant smell,

It points to its Creator,

And gladly lives to tell,

Of the magic and the wonder,

And the mystery that sings,

Praises to the Author,

And Designer of all things.

And then there is a wilting,

In the flower’s final days,

The blossom and the petals,

Cannot stay with us always.

And we no more can see it,

For the Master has passed by,

Gathering for His bouquet,

Beyond the northern sky.

Where forever in the Presence,

Of the Savior there it blooms,

In the garden of His making,

Far beyond this old world’s glooms.

Remember now the beauty,

Of the flower and its song,

Life is very fleeting,

And soon it will be gone.

But forever is the reason,

That the flower came to be,

To praise our great Creator,

For all eternity.

(Dedicated to Silvia Wallace)

“The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God stands forever.” (Isaiah 40:8, NAS)

So much of what concerns us is temporal. Many of the things that worry us the most we won’t even remember a year from now. The point is that we want to invest our lives eternally. This scripture compares human, earthly life to grass that withers and flowers that fade. When we get a little older, we see the wisdom of these verses. But eternity is placed in our hearts and the Word that we’ve received lasts forever. It is His truth that transports us from this world to the next when our assignment here is over.

Lord, help us invest in Your eternal Word, in Jesus’ name.
